On the evening of November 23, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida, a white man fired his gun 8 to 9 times into an SUV full of Black unarmed teenagers, according to local police.

The shooter, Michael Dunn, was in town for his son’s wedding and had stopped at a gas station where he encountered the teens. While waiting for his girlfriend to return to the vehicle, he started arguing with the teenagers about their loud music. After claiming that he felt threatened, he fired into the back of the SUV where 17-year old Jordan Davis was sitting.

Michael Dunn and his girlfriend then fled the scene and stayed the night at a local hotel, claiming that they feared they had a run-in with a gang. The next morning after seeing on the news that the teenager had died, they returned to Dunn’s home in Brevard County, FL. He was later arrested after police were able to track him down with  license plate information provided by witnesses.

Dunn’s attorney claims that her client did nothing wrong:  “Once all the facts come out, what really happened is made known, that it will be very clear that Mr. Dunn acted responsibly and as any responsible firearms owner acted under these same circumstances,” Lemonidis said.

Simply put, murder is murder and Michael Dunn is a murderer. He has been arraigned and bond has been denied. His plea is not guilty and he’s trying to use ‘Stand Your Ground’ as a defense.

And so here we are yet again. Another adult white male claiming that shooting and killing an innocent, unarmed Black teenager was justified! He claims that he felt threatened enough to fire a gun, yet these teens were unarmed and no physical contact was made! If Michael Dunn felt that he did nothing wrong, why is it that he fled the scene and then the city after finding out that he had killed Jordan Davis.
