Newark Denied Again By Wealthy Elites
On Thursday we found out Newark’s only movie theater, Cityplex-12, the ownership of which includes Shaquille O’Neal and Boraie Development, a theater that symbolizes the redevelopment of Newark and which has been championed by Mayor Cory Booker, suddenly CANCELLED our film about Mumia Abu-Jamal, pulling it from their schedule. With this act they have effectively blocked Newark citizens from seeing the film and witnessing Mumia’s powerful story.

NBP & PEOPLE CONDEMN CANCELLATION OF MUMIA MOVIE IN NEWARK!
On Thursday, April 11th, for reasons that have yet to be disclosed, the critically acclaimed documentary ‘Mumia-Long Distance Revolutionary,’ scheduled to be shown in Newark on Friday, April 26th at the City Plex 12 Theatre Complex, was suddenly and arbitrarily cancelled!
The film, about revolutionary journalist MumiaAbu-Jamal, who has been fighting a conviction for the killing of a Philadelphia police officer, has received critical acclaim from across the spectrum and played in other major cities without incident to date, including New York City just weeks ago. The film is also produced by Newark native Stephen Vittoria.
“We condemn the decision to cancel this film on Mumia to the fullest and we call upon all of our Mumia supporters in this area to rally around Mumia and rally around our community’s right to artistic self-determination,” said an angry Zayid Muhammad, who has been actively involved in Abu-Jamal’s case since 1990. “We believe that the hidden hand in all of this is law enforcement,” said Zayid Muhammad, a long time supporter of Mumia Abu-Jamal and area national official for the New Black Panther Party. “Just as we were asking everyone to hold the April 26th to go see the movie, we are now telling everyone to hold the 26th for a rally/press conference that will be organized in defense of Mumia and in defense of this film instead.”
